hiiiii

sorry its been so long since i've posted. there isn't really a computer lab on campus....although one is being added in my dorm! speaking of my new dorm....i'm in! its huge and there are lots of girls to get to know! i am excited because the students i was staying w/ before have interacted w/ americans before and now i am meeting students who have never really spent time w/ americans before....so it is really cool. they all think i'm crazy....go figure :-p

ummm....interesting things of note:

--the power goes out at least every other night....try doing your homework by flashlight! it really does make me appreciate electricity....although the kids here are so much better @ just hanging out....we sit around and talk a lot....i LOVE it!!!

--this is the dry season....that means water shortage....that means conservation. wow....i didn't think id become such an environmentalist here!

--books are expensive....there is no such thing as going to the ridiculously overpriced bookstore....we have to beg, borrow, steal (aka go to the library and photocopy) EVERYTHING....i will certainly not take all the books sitting on my shelf for granted when i get home.

--they have overnight prayer meetings here all the time....i can't wait to go to one! woot!

--it takes 1/2 to load roberts email....next time you see someone from ITS give them a hug....they do a darn good job!

--i start my service project next week!! i can't wait! :-) i also get to live with a host family next week. i will likely have a huge family and no electricity! its gonna be great!

ok....i only have 2 minutes left. gotta run! love you all!!!! MWAH!!!!

Too bad there wasn't a way to average the weather there and the weather here - looking out my window it sure is wet on our end(not just snow more like slush falling from the couds).

it's good to hear that your friends think your crazy... you know me - I hate change ;)

I love you girrlie!

Hi Jess,

I just finished catching up on your blog...I'm so bad at remembering to check things! It sounds like you're having a blast (maybe too much of a good time? have you slept yet??!)! I'm glad to hear you've met some awesome people...God is definitely taking care of you!

I miss you stopping in at my office just to chat...Roberts is definitely not the same without you!

Things here are busy, but good. I suppose you heard about the amazingly fantastic January weather we just went through...it was 68 on Friday...can you believe it? Not quite as nice as 80, but we'll take it! My car is experiencing technical difficulty (I know you can relate!) and will hopefully have a fixed or new transmission in the near future. Ahh...the saga of having a car a decade old...

So...when the power goes out and you have to read by flashlight...pretend you're camping! And when you have to conserve water, pretend you're camping! And when you're fighting with your mosquito netting to get dressed at midnight, pretend you're camping! But when you see a monkey on your way to class or every night you watch God paint a picture out of sun and air and water, you know you're in Uganda. I'm so terrifically excited for all you're seeing, doing, experiencing (and I'm kinda jealous too!).

I can't wait to hear what doors God opens up for you for the summer! I'm praying for you and can't wait to read the next chapter of Jess's adventures in Uganda!

I love you and miss you!!

Dee

we love you and miss you! can't say we would visit you- it's quite comfortable and well lit in the room this evening ;) just kidding. i would go there in a heartbeat if i could. good luck starting your service project.

Heather says Caton keeps calling your name for roll call in class- and she has to keep reminding him you're in Africa ;) she's praying for you and thinking about you :)

Even though she loves her new roommate, Elyse misses her former roommie and her biting attacks very muhc :'(

hey jess,

i've been checking ur blog... i'm glad that things are going well. it's really awesome to hear how appreciative you are of the things that we here at roberts are typically complaining about.... its kinda humbling really. it's an encouragement towards an attitude change that is hard to come by when things are so comfortable and safe, so thanks for that. i'll be praying for God to keep on teaching you, and for you to teach the people you're in contact with. stay safe, be dangerous, and be open...

with lots of love in Christ,
ur wee bro: david doonie

Jess,

Glad to hear that life's treating you well and you're getting some of the true African experience with power outages. I'll send you an e-mail soon even though it takes a decade to load. Hope all is well.

-Nate
